Spring Valley Ranch was founded in 1855 by the Whitney family. The ranch raised sheep and a wide variety of agricultural products. The Whitneys constructed 25 miles of crushed rock roads, 12 granite bridges, barns, stables and housing for 200 ranch hands and their families on their expansive 30,000 acre ranch which is now considered the first settled property in Rocklin. Eventually the ranch was sold and divided by a variety of development concerns and became part of suburban communities in Sacramento. This led to the development of the Sunset Whitney neighborhood, with exclusive homes built around a beautiful golf course which bears their name.
