The unincorporated town of Granite Bay got its name from a bay in Folsom Lake on the east side of the town. The whole town is sitting on granodiorite rock dating back to the Cretaceous Age. Summer days are hot with an average high of 95 but the cool evening breeze brings the evening temperatures to an average of about 60. Winters are mild with average temperatures in the 40's and 50's.
