Brief History
Granite Bay's roots extend all the way back to the 1850's, when the area was first settled by gold miners who set up camps along the American River. What is now called Auburn-Folsom Road was built to allow them to bring in supplies. Soon after, Whiskey Bar, Horseshoe Bar, and Rattlesnake Bar Roads followed to connect many settlements.
Once the gold miners established roads, water ditches, and other infrastructure, cattle ranchers began moving in. For the next several decades, Granite Bay remained a rural community, sparsely dotted with sprawling ranches.
Things changed in 1956 when the government condemned a major chunk of ranch land in order to fill the lake. Meanwhile, they subdivided remaining ranches and sold them to people moving in.
So Granite Bay transitioned into a residential development, and in 1987, local officials recognized it as "Granite Bay."
